I am fascinated by collections of objects. My sources are varied but include my own collected artefacts, found beach treasures or antique objects, displays in museums or shops, or random arrangements discovered by chance. Objects are painted as a group or individually, sometimes as part of a series of up to 20 paintings. The things I paint often have subtle connections and hidden histories or memories of a time or place. This narrative is communicated through use of text, fragments of paper, stamps and maps, a story to be discovered by the viewer. I am particularly fond of blue and white china and this piece was inspired by a small selection of my favourites! Some of these pots are still available in certain shops, others are antique. The references in the background include stamps from other countries and Indian miniatures. I am always excited to find blue and white pottery fragments on the beach, imagining journeys the original objects may have made. This piece is ultimately inspired by beaches all over the world, the wonder and intrigue as you look across the sand out to sea.
